This is my modern-ish take on this huge and well-loved song from 1990 for my beloved GenX friends by The Sundays. I sought to recycle signature elements of the original while giving it just a little something different. If you listen long enough you'll see what I mean. The Sundays are a husband-and-wife duo, so I'm particularly grateful to have had my darling drummer-husband Eduardo Torres perform on this track (who also made my 12/8 groove-conception for this cover a reality). Everything else on and in this track was a harrowing labor of love by yours truly.

In addition to a brand-new original song posted exclusively to my supporters each month at The Vault (my version of Patreon) in 2023, I'm also producing/recording/and-publicly-releasing a new cover song each month, rotating through my three different projects: One Big Dark Room, Lex Land, and moorhaunter. My supporters get the new cover song a month early, but this track, publicly released in March 2023, was the February 2023 deliverable at The Vault.

lyrics
People I know, places I go
Make me feel tongue tied
But I can see how people look down
They're on the inside
Here's where the story ends
People I see, weary of me
Showing my good side
I can see how people look down
I'm on the outside
Here's where the story ends
here's where the story ends
It's that little souvenir of a terrible year
Which makes my eyes feel sore
Oh, I never should have said the books that you read
Were all I loved you for
It's that little souvenir of a terrible year
Which makes me wonder why
It's the memories of your shed that make me turn red
Surprise, surprise, surprise
Crazy I know, places I go
Make me feel so tired
And I can see how people look down
I'm on the outside
It's that little souvenir of a terrible year
Which makes my eyes feel sore
And who ever would've thought the books that you brought
Were all I loved you for
Oh, the devil in me said, "Go down to the shed"
I know where I belong
But the only thing I ever really wanted to say
Was wrong, was wrong, was wrong
It's that little souvenir of a colorful year
Which makes me smile inside
So I cynically say the world is that way
Surprise, surprise, surprise
Here's where the story ends
here's where the story ends

After a sudden death of a loved one, singer-songwriter LEX LAND let her darker side take over. The songs of ONE BIG DARK
ROOM explore deeper lyrical territory in the hope to help others process grief and regret, and lean on each other to get through this strange and unusual thing called Life....more
This dear friend has also been a huge influence. Thoughtful lyrics of socioeconomic (as well as internal) turmoil lilt above catchy, albeit melancholy, melodies. One Big Dark Room
Each album sprung forth from the creative loins of Castleton is a bit earth-shattering, but this album-long ode to man's best friend brings me to tears every time I listen. One Big Dark Room
